what inspires you?

I was asked that question the other day after showing a friend some of my designs and all I could say was EVERYTHING! Art, design and colors are all around us. Everything can be inspiring. Our clothes we wear, the beauty outside, even taking a shower. WHAT? A shower?! I'll get to that in a minute.

I love looking at fabrics. Once upon a time I wanted to be a fashion designer - I made some of my own clothes for a bit just because it was fun. I even made my sister a skirt - and yes, she wore it! It looked cute on her too. I love finding color combinations that just POP! and fabrics offer some exciting colors that inspire me. Being outside can be inspirational if you let it.

On walks with my boys, one of them loves to look for "wishes." We call dandelions wishes...any why not? we all blow on them and make a wish right? Flowers and leaves are especially great to look at for their colors, shape and often times their hidden patterns. I know I sound a little nutty, but seriously, when you see a flower look closely next time, some have beautiful patterns.

And every once and a while my husband inspires me...or rather tells me what I should change or add to an existing design. Who knew that my very own Bob the Builder had a great eye for design and detail?

And how about that shower?! With two busy kids and a household to maintain, along with all the activities/errand that never cease - I manage to get quiet time in the shower...just me and my thoughts! In fact, the idea to start this little stationary business came to me in the shower. I know, Too Much Information!

Well there you have it. EVERYTHING can be inspirational and you can find inspiration ANYWHERE.

taking a break....

so...I have been working on my spring collection of cards and with two sick kiddos, some late nights or middle of the night awakings, it seems like they will never get done...I am surviving on caffine these days!

so here I am taking a break from designing and catching up on some friend has the celebrity look-a-like on her blog and it got me thinking back to my first semester at college. While on campus, some ramdom guy came up to me and asked if anyone had ever told me that I looked like Nicole Kidman. Now before you laugh - this was when I was 18. Pre-babies so I was skinny-minny and I had just lightened my long red hair (its still red - just not long anymore, nor have I lightned it since). Aside from the fact that I still don't see the similarity that this guy saw, I was flattered that he thought so....about a year or so later another person (different college) asked me if I had ever heard of Julianne Moore. Of course I had. This person proceeded to tell me that I looked just like her...I don't see that one either, but it is still very flattering since she is beautiful. So when I saw the celebrity look-a-likes I wanted to know if either of those two women would show up on my celebrity look-a-like chart....nope. Neither one. But some other interesting ones made the cut....see for yourself...

that was fun...who do you look like??

too good to eat

I like to watch the Food Network. Not because I can cook but because I can't cook. I tend to make the same meal time and again...we are all creatures of habit I guess. (Although I made some delicious salmon last night using fresh lemons I picked right off a tree). So...I watch it thinking that I'll get inspired, or at least maybe I'll get some new ideas. I've certainly tried a few of the recipies I've watched being prepared, but I am fairly certain that their final product tasted much better than mine.

So...the other night I could not sleep and ended up on the couch flipping through the channels. I finally landed on the food network and watched Ace of Cakes. Have you seen this show?!! I've seen it before, but it is on late at night here, so I don't tune in regularly. I did not get inspired to even attempt these AMAZING cakes, and to say that I was impressed is an understatement. Ace of Cakes is a reality show that follows the owner Duff Goldman, the cake designers and decorators at Charm City Cakes. The episode I watched was about the cake they were making for the Los Angeles premier party of one of the Harry Potter Charm City Cakes was asked to make a cake of Hogwarts. One word: AMAZING!
See for yourself....the details they put into the school and then to watch them make the little trees was incredible.

Here are a few other incredible masterpieces...

This one doesn't even look like a cake...
I wonder if they taste as good as they look?!!

sucker for bags

You name it...I love it. I have a love affair with all types of bags. Handbags, clutches, hobo's, vintage, etc. Right now, the bigger the better! Lately I am attracted to large bags... you know, something to hold everything from lip gloss to diapers. Several months ago while reading my latest Blueprint mag (which sadly MSLO recently axed), I came across an article about custom handbags from a little company called freddy&ma. So, naturally I jump onto their website to see about ordering a custom handbag. How cool it that?? Having an original that no one else has. So I sat at the computer and about an hour later I had designed several bags for myself. I did not quite make it to the check out section. At over 200 bucks a pop, it is not exactly in the budget right now. They do, however have a cute little clutch for 80 bucks, and with a gift certificate I got, I did get to take one of my designs to the check out section! freddy&ma have an incredible interactive website where you can pick the bag style, choose the leather trim, pick from hundreds of great fabrics ... you'll spend hours designing your own bag too - go check it out!

**For some reason my camera was not working last night - here is my cute freddy&ma bag.

Do you celebrate Valentine's Day?

If there is one family tradition that I loved growing up, it was on Valentine's Day. I am not talking about the roses and chocolates, or the conversation hearts (although what's Valentine's Day without those). It was our special Valentine's dinner from around the world. This tradition started when I was young. My dad would cook a special dinner consisting of French cuisine. This went on for a few years and he often had a new food item that we had never had before. I'll never forget the Escargo! My first and only time eating snails. Later, my dad changed it up a bit to make meals from other places from around the world (or country). Another dinner was fresh lobster. When I say fresh, I really do mean fresh. He had the Lobster shipped to us from Maine and I have vivid memories of the little snappers inside our bath tub (although I don't think they were still alive). Another fun dinner was cajun cuisine. We dined on Alligator that year! Finding Alligator in our home town was hard to come by, so my dad had it shipped from where else?...Louisana. We also had the pleasure of dining on Mediterrean and Italian cuisine.

I love having my own family now. We get to start our own traditions in our own way. Hopefully our traditions will provide lasting and fond memories just as those Valentine's dinners provided me.
